QUINCE

The quince is a close relative of the apple and the pear; it is eaten in a similar manner and is bright golden yellow when ripe. The quince is an ancient fruit, originating in Mesopotamia, which has a central role in many ceremonies and stories of the ancient world, and was cultivated before apples were. It is likely that the forbidden fruit, eaten by Adam and Eve, was a quince rather than an apple. This deliciously perfumed fruit may be eaten fresh, and was used by Greek brides, in ancient times, to perfume their kisses before they entered the wedding ceremony. Quinces are also commonly used for cooking, and make excellent jam, jelly, pudding and liquors.
The Quince did not become a popular cultivation in North America, due to the presence of a bacteria the greatly troubles the tree; however it is cultivated in Argentina and Uruguay.

The quince is a light fruit, averaging 50 calories for a medium sized fruit, and is a good source of potassium and vitamin C.
